Frequently asked questions

The honest answers to what homeowners ask us most. Can't find what you're looking for? Send us a note.

  • Do I need design experience to use Plantyd?

No. Plantyd is built for homeowners, not landscape architects. If you can drop a pin on a map and drag a plant onto a canvas, you can design your yard. We handle the scale, the sun modeling, and the plant filtering for you.

  • How is Plantyd different from SketchUp, Planner 5D, or iScape?

Three things. First, we start from a real satellite photo of your property — not a blank grid. Second, we model sun and shade across the entire year, not just summer noon. Third, we show you how every plant will look from Year 1 through Year 15. Other tools focus on photoreal renders of pre-built objects; Plantyd focuses on whether your plan will actually work in your specific conditions.

  • How accurate is the satellite imagery?

Plantyd uses Mapbox satellite imagery, refreshed regularly across most of the developed world. Most North American suburban properties have imagery accurate to within a foot or two. You can adjust your traced boundary by hand if anything looks off.

  • How accurate are the sun and shade projections?

Plantyd computes sun and shade from your project's latitude, longitude, and date using the same astronomical model professional designers rely on, accurate to the hour at any point in the year. Free projects get a summer sun map; Pro adds the year-round model that accounts for winter shade.

  • Will the plant recommendations work in my climate?

Yes. Both Free and Pro filter plants by your USDA hardiness zone. The difference is the library size and the sun analysis: Free works from a 500+ plant starter library with a summer-only sun map; Pro adds the full 10,000+ plant library and a year-round sun model that accounts for winter shade — which is what matters most when you're picking plants that need full sun.

  • Can I export my design to share with a contractor or nursery?

Yes — both Free and Pro plans export a printable PDF plan and a plant shopping list. Free exports carry a small Plantyd watermark; Pro exports are watermark-free. We're working on direct nursery integrations — drop us a line at hello@plantyd.com and tell us which ones you use.

  • What's actually included in the free tier?

One active project with up to 15 plants — enough to design a foundation bed, a planter grouping, or a small garden area from start to finish. You get full satellite import, summer sun and shade analysis, USDA hardiness filtering, the Year 1 and Year 15 growth views — newly planted and fully grown, which is what you need to space a bed correctly — the plant shopping list, and a watermarked PDF export — all from a 500+ plant starter library. No time limit, no credit card. When you're ready to design the whole yard, Pro lifts the plant cap, adds the year-round sun model, fills in the in-between growth years, and unlocks the full library.

  • Do I need a credit card to sign up?

No. The free tier is free forever — no card, no trial countdown. You only enter payment info if and when you choose to upgrade to Pro.

  • Can I cancel my Pro subscription anytime?

Yes. Cancel from your account settings and your subscription will end at the close of your current billing period. Your designs stay yours; you'll drop back to the free tier features but keep access to everything you've already made.

  • What happens to my projects if I downgrade from Pro?

Your designs are always yours. Projects beyond the free tier's one-project limit stay accessible in view mode after you downgrade, and you can still export each of them once.

  • Where does the growth timeline data come from?

We combine mature height, spread, and growth-rate data from horticultural references with USDA zone modifiers. Real plants vary — we treat the timeline as an honest planning tool, not a guarantee. The Year-1 and Year-15 silhouettes are usually more useful for spacing decisions than the exact months in between.

  • Does Plantyd work outside the United States?

Satellite imagery and sun modeling work globally. The plant library is currently weighted toward North American species and USDA hardiness zones. If you're gardening elsewhere the tool still works, but expect to do a bit more of the plant research yourself for now.

  • Is my project private?

Yes. Your designs are private by default and aren't shared with anyone. We don't sell your data. The one exception is photos you opt in to contribute to the community plant library — those are clearly marked when you upload them.

Still wondering if it's right for you?

The free tier is free forever — no credit card, no countdown. The fastest way to find out is to design your first yard.
